    As cities confront more frequent and severe flooding, resilience requires additionality to engineering solutions 鈥� it demands effective specification of public and private governance, cross-sector collaboration, and innovative approaches to funding and decision-making. Flushing Meadows Corona Park (FMCP) makes this challenge concrete: critical public infrastructure, major private development, recreational assets, and vulnerable communities all intersect within a highly flood-prone landscape.

    This panel will explore how public agencies, private stakeholders, designers, and community partners can work together to advance nature-based restoration and long-term flood resilience 鈥� examining governance's role in balancing competing priorities, defining public and private responsibility, and leveraging partnerships to finance resilient infrastructure. The discussion will also surface emerging approaches for quantifying social, environmental, and economic benefits, helping decision-makers evaluate investment beyond traditional cost-benefit frameworks.

    Panelists will discuss actionable ways to meet growing electricity demand without ballooning electricity rates, increasing emissions, and reliability risk.     Panel 3 (3:40-4:55): Environmental Progress in an Era of Government Withdrawal

    Panelists will discuss how the U.S. can maintain progress toward environmental targets even as the federal government and many states turn away from environmental regulation. There is a long-running presumption that government action is the only lever for environmental protection. Interrogating that view will be necessary to meet environmental targets and to avoid locking in infrastructure that does not meet the needs of future generations. The goal is to present a realistic view of how decisionmakers can act upon their ambitions.

  • The Working Class and Democracy in America 鈥� Oct. 15, 2026

    Organized by Vanderbilt 溏心vlog免费B站鈥檚 Center for Global Democracy, this event will convene a timely conversation about the state of democracy and governance in the U.S. just weeks before the midterm elections, when working-class voters will once again play an important role in shaping American politics.

    How are working-class Americans and their interests represented in American politics today? How have political leaders and parties responded to the priorities of working-class voters? What has changed over the past two years, and will those changes persist into 2028?

    The event will bring together a distinguished group of experts for a wide-ranging conversation about class, politics and the role of working-class Americans in U.S. democracy. The discussion coincides with the release of panelists Nicholas Carnes and Noam Lupu鈥檚 new book, Keeping Workers Off the Ballot (Princeton 溏心vlog免费B站 Press), and draws on their related American Academy of Arts and Sciences report, How to Elect More Working-Class Americans and Why It Matters.

    Vanderbilt and the Whitney launch their partnership with a Nov. 10 conversation featuring emerging artists at VU鈥揘YC.

    Vanderbilt 溏心vlog免费B站 and the Whitney Museum of American Art will present Artists and the City: Emerging Voices in Conversation on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2026, at Vanderbilt 溏心vlog免费B站鈥揘ew York City in Chelsea.

    The inaugural public program of Vanderbilt and the Whitney鈥檚 new multi-year partnership will bring together three artists who have recently exhibited at the Whitney for a conversation about their practices, their perspectives on contemporary art museums and the pressing issues facing artists today.

    The conversation will be co-moderated by Marcela Guerrero, DeMartini Family Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Rebecca VanDiver, associate professor of history of art and architecture and Andrew W. Mellon Chair of History of Art and Architecture at Vanderbilt 溏心vlog免费B站. Participating artists will be announced following confirmation.

    Since its founding in 1930, the Whitney has maintained a longstanding commitment to supporting artists in the early stages of their careers. Inspired by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney鈥檚 legacy of championing living artists, the program will bring the museum鈥檚 storied engagement with contemporary art into dialogue with Vanderbilt students and the university鈥檚 broader community.

    The event is the first in a series of opportunities created through the Vanderbilt鈥揥hitney partnership, which will include internships, scholarly programming, faculty collaboration, alumni engagement, public events and other initiatives.
