If you are eligible for an extension of your J-1 visa status, please discuss this with your sponsoring department. The department will submit the extension request documents to ISSS. We will review and issue an extended DS-2019 upon completion of a final request from the department. If you are not receiving financial support from Vanderbilt, you are required to submit proof of adequate funding for the duration of the extension.
As a reminder, J-1 research scholars/professors have a maximum stay of 5 years, short-term scholars have a maximum stay of 6 months, and student interns have a maximum stay of 12 months. The DS-2019 cannot be extended beyond these limits.
Keep in mind that we cannot process extensions if you have received an approval from the Department of State for a waiver of the two-year home residency requirement. All requests must be submitted before the DS-2019 end date, and at least 30 days in advance.
